Image linked to the passage, "Woman waits, Seething, Blooming"
How does your image link to the story?
Throughout the story, there are many references to the mother, as well as the son. Throughout the passage the woman comes across as a very angry, worried character. The character also portrays that she has a lot of inside anger, and that she can’t wait to take it out on her son. This may be due to the fact that she is just worried about where her son is, or because she just wants to relief herself and all her anger out on her son, as she mentions ‘picturing’ what she’s going to say and do when he gets home. This shows that the mother is a very angry person, and that she is very hot headed towards the son. My image links to this story, as it shows the woman’s journey throughout the short extract, and all the little aspects to the story are included. In the passage, she mentions the time, and the tapping of her foot, which symbolizes that she might be worried or paranoid. She also mentions the headlights coming through the window, which shows she is looking out for her son. As well as this, she mentions that she is drinking at the same time, which may be to relieve her pain or anger towards her son. My image conveys to observers how the character deals with the troubles of her wreck less, selfish teenager.
How have you used composition in the picture?
In my image, I have included many aspects of the story. However, I have also included a lot of empty space. I have done this so the different aspects of the image stand out more, and have more of a harsh effect to the whole photograph. I have also made the edges of the photograph very clear, so there isn’t anything irrelevant in the photograph, that doesn’t feature in the short story. I have used composition in the photograph, to make the photo sharper. Also in the photograph, there are different objects, and when looking at the photo, your eye is led around each of them, as they all give of different shapes and sizes.
What type of lighting did you use?
In my image, I used the flash, and there was some background light also included from the TV in the photograph. I have done this, as in the passage, it mentioned how the woman was up early hours in the morning waiting for her son, therefore it would still be dark. It also mentioned how the character was watching TV, therefore there would still be light reflecting on the other objects in the photo, like the wine glass and the clock. This lighting also gave the photograph some shadow, as I took the photograph from a distance, therefore it gave it more of a shadowing affect. I did this on purpose, as the passage gave of a dull tone, and as if the mother wasn’t very happy about the on-going situation. For each part of the photograph I have linked the lighting to the story, so it is linked.
Can you discuss the image in terms of exposure?
In my image, the objects have been exposed to light, but not a very powerful amount. I have done this so the objects give a shadow off each other to create a dark look and effect for the photo. I have also used slow shutter speed so the light in the image is captured well within the photograph. I have done this, so now you can see the reflection of the TV, on the glass, as you would as it’s taken in the ‘evening’, whilst his mother is waiting for the son to return home. This also creates tension within the story, as the red wine in the glass, has been given a more hash look now the light is on it, and the colour red symbolizes anger. –Which also relates to how angry the mother is at her son in the story.
If you had more to time to do another shoot, how would you improve it?
If I had more time to do another shoot, I would do it in a different location, which suited the story more. I would also find more appropriate objects which suited the story, and what I thought the woman would most likely to be living in, rather than in my house. I would also maybe position the objects differently to what I did in the picture, t give it a different look altogether, however I am happy with how I composed my photograph, and the end outcome of it.
