Identity throughout portraiture.
Q1: Describe what you see when you look at an image. Where does your eye go first? Why?
To the right is the photo o have chosen to look at, from the series ‘Father and son’. When I first looked at this photo your eyes are drawn to the childs head and his blue eyes and blonde hair, as well as the oversized jacket which obviously isn’t his. This draws more attention to the childs head as it’s so small compared to the rest of the photo.

Q2: What is the subjects relationships to the other elements in the photograph such as people, the environment we find him or her in, or objects within the scene? What do we learn from these details? From this photo and the title of the shoot, we as observers can presume that the jacket the child has on is his fathers. Therefore the relationship between the child and the object, ( Jacket ) is father and son. This gives the viewers more of an insight to what is going on, and more information on the child, and the over sized jacket.
Q4: What moods or feelings are expressed in the portrait? How
From this photo, there are a lot of moods and feelings that are portrayed to the viewers. One of them being a feeling of ‘love’. This comes across vividly to the viewer, as the relationship between the child, and the photographer, is presumably father and son. The parenthood in this photo shows the feelingsportrayed from the father, to the son, which is love.
The childs face expressions also portrays a certain mood to the photo. The childs face comes across as quite expressionless and blank, maybe even confused. This also could make the viewers more intrieged to what is going on in the photo, and want to find out more on the background of this photoraph. Q6: What do we learn about the subject by looking at this photo? What details reveal that information?Once again, the jacket in this photo is a big part of the photo and how it was made. By just looking at the photo, some may not presume that the jacket belongs to the child’s father. However, we can gage that the jacket is the fathers, and that the relationship is looking at the child growing as well as his maturity. We may also presume that the father is looking back on his childhood, and is relecting on how he has grown up to become a father.

Q3: Are there clues in the image that suggests when and where the portrait was made?
In this image there are few clues to suggest the location of the shoot. One of them being the name of the shoot, which is ‘Father and Son’. Another being the jacket, which we presume is the child’s fathers. This may suggest that the shoot was taken at a home of the childs, and that the father was taking the photo himself. This could also suggest that the photographer is looking back on his childhood, and is showing the child in the photograph growing up, to soon be a father himself.
Q5: What can you tell about how this picture was made? Consider the visual strategies used by the artist such as use of light, time of day, vantage point, framing and composition, scale and presentation. From this picture, the child has been dressed with his fathers coat, and then it looks like the child is sat down rather than stood up. The photograph has been coposed well so the child is in the centre of the photo, and is the mai feature. Due to this, your eyes aredrawn to the child as soon as you see the picture. The photo was taken during the day time, and has been taken with the use of natural lighting. This makes the photo look better than it would if articifial light was used. The light on the childs face has created a shadow to the side of his face, making the centre of his face more striking towards the audience. The child has been presented so he is in the centre of the photo, as well as the jacket. The photo has also been composed as if the child himself is made out to be smaller altogether than the jacket. This gives the jacket a more outstanding place in the photo.
